What is it about old things?
Things handed down to you from ages past. Things found in an old house. Things found in an old box shoved away in the attic.
Like the old music box that stops mid note then start again on its own hours latter. The old painting that always seems to watch you no matter where you may stand in the room. The old china doll that you could have sworn you saw move from the corner of your eye. What is it about these old things that makes your hair stand on end at the very thought of they鈥檙e presence when you鈥檙e forced to walk past them in the dark?
Why don鈥檛 the new things we purchase ourselves make us uneasy? What makes the child鈥檚 teddy bear any more innocent than the doll on the shelf? Or the CD player more soothing than the music box on the mantle? Or the family portrait more welcoming than the painting in the hall? What is it about old things? What is it that we don鈥檛 trust? What is it that makes us fear them?
The answer lies in front of our eyes; in the very word we use for them. Our conscious mind says 鈥榦ld鈥? our subconscious says 鈥榟istory鈥? These 鈥榦ld鈥?things have a past. What have they seen? How many hands have they past through? Or more importantly, how much of that past has stayed with them? What kinds of things may have gone deeper than the worn frame of the painting, the chipped glass of the china doll? Or wound itself around the knocking wheels and rusty springs of the music box until it became part of the objects personality.
The answer to what we fear is simply this: Old thing have histories. And as surly as they have past from one hand to the next to find itself in your keeping, we鈥檒l never know if somewhere along the way they accumulated something other than dust.Things not to think about when your supposed to be sleeping: is this a good narration for a horror book?
';How many hands have they PASSED through';
Just a minor mistake.
I really like the text (and I'm a very harsh critic so don't take it lightly :)) ). The whole idea and your sentences are both very gripping. I'd read this on, to find out more :)
